在《小雅·鸳鸯》中鸳鸯和乘马不是普通的用作比喻的意象,而是用作象征的意象,它们在诗篇中进行着自身的矛盾运动,共同发挥作用以便在朦胧与生动之临界域里委婉曲折地描述君王之福禄这一较为抽象的范畴。象征在中国古代文化中早已存在,但是在中国未发生欧美那样的象征主义的诗歌运动,因此在文学的象征理论方面有所不足。这属于比较文学研究的文类问题。客观地认识中国文学中的象征,并运用西方有关象征和象征主义的理论来研究《诗经》,不仅有助于我们认识某些难解的诗篇,而且有益于我们丰富和发展世界文学的理论。
