It is a common practice in all countries and regions to promote economic development through the establishment of special economic zones. Since the seventies and eighties of the 20th century, many African countries have also set up a series of special economic zones focusing on export processing zones and free trade zones. In order to let African countries learn more about and share China’s successful experiences in establishing special economic zones, especially the experience of the development of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the “East Asia-Africa Special Economic Zone and Competitive Industrial Cluster South hosted by the World Bank and undertaken by Shenzhen University South Cooperation Experience Sharing China Area Conference ”was held in Shenzhen from May 9 to May 2009. More than 50 scholars from home and abroad gathered in Shenzhen to exchange research findings and discuss issues concerning the development experience of China’s special economic zones and competitive industrial clusters and their reference to African countries.
