由苏颂、韩公廉主持制作的水运仪象台在中国古代科技成就中,占有一个特殊的地位。其原因主要有以下3点:(1)中国古代天文学受到统治者的高度重视,进行天文测量的天文仪器在中国古代得到重点发展,从历史文献记载可见,历朝历代建造的天文仪器具备了相当的规模和数量,而其中水运仪象台所具有的空前绝后的规模和集测量、演示、报时于一身的特色,在古代制造的天文仪器中是极为引人注目的。(2)水运仪象台诞生于中国古代科技发展达到顶峰时期的北宋,它所体现的规模化、独创性、精密程度等方面的特点,无疑堪称当时的代表作,从它的身上反映出中国古代科技发展的水平和研究、制作能力。(3)由于详细记载了水运仪象台的整体和各部位机械结构、部件尺寸并附有图示的《新仪象法要》一书得以流传,对后人进行研究复原提供了不可多得的宝贵资料,从而使对水运仪象台的研究引起了国内外学术界的关注。
