In recent years, computer assisted language learning (CALL) has emerged as a new research field in second language acquisition. In order to find new characteristics of some Chinese students’ English learning, this thesis makes a tentative study to investigate students’ language learning strategies and their autonomous competence in CALL environment.It is believed that learners’ autonomous competence in language learning is embodied in their language learning strategies. Computers’ popularity in learning will not only exert certain influences on learners’ way of learning, but also create a favorable environment to foster their autonomy in English learning.The major findings can be summarized as follows: students spend a lot of time in using computers but not in using computers to learn English;they demonstrate high competence in making and adjusting learning plans as well as choosing, monitoring, evaluating and adjusting learning strategies, but don’t do well in monitoring and evaluating learning process and achievements;they are good at utilizing affective strategies but not at social strategies;most of them hold positive attitudes toward CALL, except for speaking, while high autonomous competence of strategies employment appears only in limited activities of listening and vocabulary learning;computer frequent users in English learning differ significantly from infrequent users in terms of their attitudes toward CALL and their learning strategies;the correlation of attitudes and strategy use of computer frequent users in English learning is much closer than that of infrequent users.
