端阳民俗具有祛毒辟邪的功用。白娘娘作为蛇妖,与端阳五毒之“蛇”具有了联系。《白蛇传》文本在历史演变中增入了《端阳》一折。随着文本的不断累积,端阳民俗越来越融入白蛇故事中,从而使白娘娘的形象从“妖性”逐渐过渡到“人性”。在《端阳》一折中,端阳民俗与白蛇故事结成了有机的整体,一方面促进白蛇故事的完善,另一方面丰富了端阳民俗的内涵,说明民间习俗与民间传奇是一个不断融合、不断发展的动态过程。
