Tension is the basic concept of Anglo-American new criticism poetics, which has great influence. However, it is generally believed that the concept of tension is borrowed from physics and narrowly considers that tension refers to the dialectical unity of two aspects of contradiction and opposition in the poetic meaning. This article analyzes the concept of tension proposed by the criticism of the new critic Allan Southe, and points out: First, tension is not borrowed from physics; Second, the elements of tension are connotation and extension, the meaning is that in poetry Third, tension presents a multi-level spatial structure in which linguistic extensions (meaning of meaning) and connotations (implications) have parallel aesthetic meanings.
