文学史上言鬼怪题材的小说很多，清代张南庄的《何典》更把这种小说推向极致，通篇言鬼，以鬼城世界喻现实世界，对封建社会的官僚体系和道德体系进行了揭露批判，反映了封建社会具有独立人格的知识分子的复仇心态。同时《何典》幽默滑稽的风格和对方言、土语的运用，也在古代小说中别具一格。
