在东汉经学融合今古文风气的影响下,《说文解字》一方面坚持古文经学的基本立场,一方面对今文经学加以吸收,这一态度和许慎《五经异义》对今古文经说的兼收并蓄是一致的。《说文》在经学流派、经本、经说等层面,多元地吸收了今文经学的学术成果。具体而言,《说文》引《易》从孟氏,收字多取三家《诗》,在训释中充分吸收了《白虎通》义理声训和《五经异义》等文献中的今文经说。《说文》对今文经学的吸收,体现出“小学”与经学兼顾的二元标准,主要受到了形义统一规律的制约。
