由于美国哥伦比亚大学研究人员对光纤直接与超大规模集成电路连接新技术的研究,笨重的光纤耦合器在许多应用领域将可能成为过时的东西。用这种技术,可以节省空间,提高芯片一光纤连接的可靠性,而且由于密度提高,可与一块芯片连接的光纤数也比现在的多。象这样连接的芯片可应用于许多领域,如通信中的开关系统。
Due to researchers at Columbia University in the United States who are working on new technologies for direct and VLSI fiber connections, bulky fiber couplers can become obsolete in many applications. This technique saves space and increases the reliability of a chip-to-fiber connection, and because of the increased density, more fibers can be connected to a single chip than today. A chip connected like this can be used in many fields, such as a switching system in communication.
