多元化战略是企业的总体战略之一,是企业最高层次的战略。只有总体战略选择好之后,企业才能制定较低层次的业务单位战略和职能战略。这是因为总体战略需要根据企业的目标,选择企业可以竞争的经营领域,合理配置企业经营所必需的资源,使企业各项经营业务互相支持、互相协调。企业的发展战略不止多元化战略一种,还包括一体化与密集型战略等。纵观世界大型企业,专注于一个领域发展的企业是不多见的,绝大多数企业横跨多个领域,并在其中的一个或者数个领域中处于领先地位,而它们在企业从小到大的发展路径中正是选择了多元化的发展战略。
