日本和中国,由于地理上一衣带水,相隔极近;而中国古代的文化又远超于日本,所以从很古时起,日本就通过朝鲜半岛吸收中国的先进文明。到五世纪时,随着交通工具的发达,日本已能直接向中国吸取文明,而不必再假手朝鲜。因此,日本在苏我氏消灭了物部氏,取得中央的支配权后,就向当时的隋朝,派出了使节。608年(隋大业4年、日推古16年),当时摄政的圣德太子在派遣小野妹子使隋的时候,就派了一批留学生、僧随行,直接到中国学习当时他们需要的生产技术、统治经验和其他先进文化。这是历史上有文字记载的首批日本派到中国的留学生、僧。他们的名字现在可知的有:倭汉直福因、奈罗译语惠 Japan and China, because of the geography of a strip of water, are very close.
