Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I’m afraid you’ll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It’s the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on the radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn’t matter. Just be relaxed. Try to catch every word.
Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He’s afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well you must try to talk with others so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First, we must choose the books we’re interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.
Keep writing English diary. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don’t be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.
Easier said than done. Well, let’s do more practice from now on. I’m sure you’ll learn English well in this way.

The waste problem is one of the most important problems in the world. Thinking about the millions of tons of waste we create every year and the pollution caused by the waste, really, we need to deal with our waste.
In fact, at least half the packaging (包装) materials we throw away can be used to help produce other forms of power. Each of us plays a part in helping to recycle.
Recycling has clear advantages. Recycling bottles, paper, cans and plastics means that the same materials are being used more than once-extending their life and maximizing(最大化) their value. This saves the costs of producing products.
It is a good start to buy food and other goods with as little packaging as possible. You could even begin growing some of your own fruit and vegetables, or buying them from local farm shops or markets.
Reusing instead of throwing away is another practical idea. Bottles, boxes and bags can all be used time and again.
When you throw things away, sort out newspapers from magazines, bottles, cans and even old clothes and take them to your nearest recycling centre.
By recycling or reusing our waste we can greatly reduce the amount of rubbish. This reduces the amount of land pollution, air pollution, and saves an amount of energy.

“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”
“Yeah, sure, what is it?” replied the man.
“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”
“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily. “I just want to know, please tell me, how much do you make an hour?” pleased the little boy.
“If you must know, I make $ 20 an hour.”
“Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $ 10?”
The father was furious, “If the only reason you ask for money is to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. And ask yourself why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day, but you ...”
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even more angry about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $ 10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often.
The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened it.
“Are you asleep, son?” he asked.

Here’s the $ 10 you asked for.” The little boy sat straight up, smiling, “Oh, thank you, daddy!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled (褶皱的) bills. The man, seeing that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, then looked up at his father.
“Why do you want more money when
you already have some?” the father grumbled.

I’ve heard the saying, “The best gift parents can ever give to their children is to love each other.” I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying the truth of this statement for over 40 years. From as far back as I can remember, my mom and dad were a team. Sure, they argued sometimes, but there was never any doubt that they loved each other. And, because of that, they each received even more joy than they gave. Dad once told me, “True love is when you love that person more than you do yourself.”
This lesson made such an impression on me. I still remember when I was 12 and we were getting carpet installed (安装) in our home. After lunch, Dad went to talk with the crew boss about the job. I was around the corner listening.
The boss said, “This is an expensive job. Women will really spend your money, won’t they?”
Dad responded, “Well, I’ll tell you. When they were right there with you before you had any money, it’s a pleasure to do anything for them you possibly can.” This wasn’t the answer the boss expected to hear. He was looking for negative banter(戏谑) about wives which, to him, was natural. He tried again, “But, gee, they’ll really play off that and spend all they can, won’t they?” Dad replied, as I knew he would. “Hey, when they’re the reason you’re successful, you want them to do the things they enjoy. There’s no greater pleasure.” Witnessing my dad in that moment taught me more about loving and respecting your wife than anything he could ever have told me. They are now retired and enjoying just hanging out, reading, and visiting their grandchildren. They recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary(周年纪念). They are more in love than ever.

Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt my heart broken. I couldn’t talk to anyone about my problem, and I didn’t want my parents to worry about me.

“No, daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy.

The ticket woman told him the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand. The man’s lip (嘴唇) started to quiver (微颤). He leaned (靠) towards her and asked again, “How much did you say?”
