[United States] Corrosion of steel, aluminum and other metal structures not only cost tens of millions of dollars in repairs and parts replacement in many countries, but also threaten safety. For example: The anti-corrosion treatment of ships, tanks, airplanes and other equipment consumes a total of 229 million U.S. dollars each year. The cost of replacing damaged materials and components due to corrosion accounts for about 3.5% of the GDP of industrialized countries, with consequential losses in production, environmental impacts, disruptions in transportation and casualties.
