The Great Negro migration is one of Augustus Wilson’s major themes in the Afro-American experience, and the piano lesson is also included. From 1916 to 1930, Afro-Americans embraced the desire for equal democracy to migrate to the industrial cities in the north, seeking employment opportunities and seeking better education for their children so as to get out of poverty and lead a better life. However, after the north, most black people live on the bottom of society. At the same time, their attempts to integrate into the white community and lose touch with the past left them in an identity crisis. Wilson believes that the great migration is a huge mistake. To maintain their integrity, blacks must not forget the past, cut off their ties with the South, let alone forget their black identity.
