A thorough investigation and analysis of the cause of a fire on an internal combustion diesel engine operating on the East Japan Railway found that the fire was caused by the diesel engine oil. When the train is stopped, a long period of idling of the diesel engine causes the oil to evaporate and accumulate in the exhaust muffler in a large amount. When the train climbs the ramp, the upper part of the oil comes into contact with the high temperature exhaust gas and is ignited. Flames spread, melting the exhaust chimney, eventually leading to a fire truck.
