【Abstract】This paper centers on the analysis of the relationship between language and culture. It discussed how language and culture are related to each other, what influence culture has on language etc.
【Key Words】language; culture; relationship; influence
People always say “language is a part of culture and reflects culture; learning a language is inseparable from learning its culture”.I agree on it.There is a close relationship between language and culture. They affect each other and can’t be separated.
1.Language is the carrier of culture.
According to the history of Chinese, language can be divided into three parts: pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. It seems that some words are similar with modern words, but in fact they are completely different. For instance,“suiran” in modern Chinese means “though”,while in ancient Chinese it means “nevertheless”.The difference of vocabulary reflects the difference of language use.
Codes of language reflects cultural difference. When learning foreign languages,we can not understand many words without the understanding of cultural background. For example,“lucky dog” means “a person who is lucky”.However,in China, phrases with “dog” are not good, such as “ gou yan kan ren di (act like a snob)”.While in English,“dog” is related to many good things like “love me love my dog”,because people there admire dogs’ loyalty and they regard dogs as families. If we know the cultural background well,we can understand the cultural phenomenon well.
2.Culture has influence on language.
In English, there is many inverted sentences whose structure are the result first, the reason second, and the modifier third. It is almost opposite in Chinese: the modifier first, and the others in order. And we can find that just like language structures, generally in personality,Western people are more extroverted than Chinese people, and they prefer to express emotions directly.Cultural diversity may be the keystone to form languages as different modes.
The Times changes, the culture changes, and the language changes. The Internet language is born by the Internet culture.Though some expressions of Internet languages take bad effects on the development of languages, they make languages more vivid and expressive. For example,“IC (I see.)”,“LOL (laugh out loud)”,“Thx (Thanks.)”,etc.
From all above,we can conclude that language and culture is closed to each other and they can not be separated from each other.
