作为新德国电影运动的重要导演,法斯宾德的电影创作从一开始就走上了现实主义的创作道路,他始终以冷静而理性的眼光深入探讨德国人的精神世界,对德国历史和现实进行了严厉的审视和批判。在创作中,他一方面继承传统现实主义电影的那种直面现实、抨击社会的批判精神;另一方面又对其加以改造和发展,增加了许多极具个人风格的表现手法。在其众多的影片中,《莉莉·玛莲》具有相当的代表性,它较全面地体现了其创作风格。
