The U.S. Air Force Air Combat Center began validation in 1989 to determine whether existing missile warning systems (MWS) were capable of providing sufficient omni-missile warning in the high-speed, large dynamic environment of tactical fighters. From the Second World War to the present, studies on the loss of fighter jets show that about 70% of the pilots shot down did not even know they were being attacked. In recent years, the problem of detection has become more serious due to omni-directional and low-smoke infrared missiles. In Desert Storm operations, more than half of the airplanes and damaged combat aircraft lost by the U.S. Air Force were caused by infrared missiles. This incident shows that aircraft pilots need assistance to detect the threat. MWS can provide this assistance.
