Foucault considered Western paintings from the 15th to the 20th centuries to be governed by two main principles: the principle of similarity and the principle of equivalence. Güell focuses on the process by which the similarities represented by oil paintings work, and Magritte’s two “This is not a pipe” use visible techniques to show that the two major principles pointed out by Foucault are disintegrated process. The pursuit of painting should be to showcase the knowledge of the painting itself and produce an extremely rich image and oppose the search for the meaning behind the painting. Through Foucault’s discussion of painting, the sacred role of painting through the body to present the truth of the world has been dismantled, and the traditional viewing model of “immersive observation” has lost its lofty status.
