The “American Dream” written by Eugene O’Neill, the father of American drama, has unique ideological implication and aesthetic value. His “American Dream ” is synonymous with despair, confusion and personality alienation. The dream catcher also loses the essence of man as human beings, and the ugly manifestation. Starting with the analysis of the connotation of “American Dream ” and its trans - generational changes, this article shows the demise of “American Dream ” in the classic plays of O’Neill from three aspects of wealth, family and love: The fetishism in American society and its distortion of ethical values and alienation of the people are the root causes of the dream of “American Dream” abandoning moral code and thus distorting into lust and desire. O’Neill’s “American Dream ” art presents the human existence predicament and the spiritual crisis artistically, portrays a tragic step on the trajectory of human society and gives us the artistic enlightenment of history and aesthetics.
