Jane Loudon is a 19th-century popular science writer who published more than 20 botanic and horticultural works. Botany, which is written for women, is a masterpiece of botany. In the highly gendered Victorian context, Loudon’s life and career are influenced by men, mainly as follows: as a wife of horticulturalist John Loudon, she has the motivation to study botany and horticulture; widowhood and Debt has allowed her to embark on the road to professional science writers; using low-cost black and white woodcut illustrations that emphasize their interpretation rather than their beauty; followed by botanists toward modern botany, including the use of natural classification systems, Gender-oriented title; bid farewell to the old traditions of women like epistolary bodies and dialogues botany writing, the use of male writers more recognized textbook style. Loudon and this book embody the duality of her role as a traditional middle-class woman and a popular science writer, as well as the duality of the old tradition and the new tradition of science writing.
