Britain currently spends 17 billion pounds a year on building maintenance, and the Birmingham City Council in England is responsible for the maintenance of more than 400 damaged buildings. It is very dangerous and expensive to inspect the outer surface of the building. Inspectors must set up scaffolding, rent lifting equipment or use hanging basket. Robots, on the other hand, can carry more instruments and perform more accurate measurements than inspectors under hazardous conditions. Robots move quickly and are easy to use without damaging the building. It can also cover a larger area, especially in difficult places. Robots can also repair buildings, such as paint or sealant, which are detrimental to human health. Because of these benefits, Birmingham City Council is very interested in using robots to repair buildings.
