汉代是我国古代铜镜发展的鼎盛时期。“四神”题材为纹饰的铜镜是汉代铜镜的代表作品之一。“四神”铜镜的纹饰简单明了,将写实与夸张结合起来,以遒劲有力的线条刻画出“四神”的形态。四神规矩镜布局设计体现了汉代天圆地方的宇宙观念,是四方空间观念的具体体现。“四神”的观念信仰在汉代已经得到确立和成熟,“四神”纹饰铜镜达到汉代人们希望辟除不祥、富贵安康的吉祥期盼。汉代铜镜的“四神”纹饰以丰满的形象,表现出了力量、运动以及由之而形成的“气势”的美,构筑出汉代浪漫主义的艺术风格,呈现出中华本土的艺术审美传统。
