花衫是20世纪20年代以后,综合青衣、花旦、刀马旦的艺术特点发展而成的新的旦角类型。在花衫形成之前,按旧有的规矩,一个演员不能兼演青衣、花旦和刀马旦。“通天教主”王瑶卿不甘受这种束缚,以改革自任,把青衣沉静端庄的风格,花旦活泼灵巧的表演,刀马旦的武打、工架等熔为一炉,创作出一种唱、念、做、打并重的旦角行当,被称为花衫。京剧四大名旦梅兰芳、程砚秋、尚小云、荀慧生所编演的新剧目,大都属于花衫范畴,如《霸王别姬》中的虞姬、《汉明妃》中
