This article, combined with his related poems, analyzes his main idea, “The only way I can effectively testify is writing.” Hill’s “witness” history as his mission because he realized that forgetfulness of culture is a major illness in contemporary society; questioned the ability of language representation and mourned the martyrs sacrificed to fight against violence are Hill’s two motifs of poetry that testifies to history; the late-stage poetry’s mournful-looking testimony to the outstanding artists in Western history shows his thinking on the social function of the arts.
