In late 1964, Professor Ben Shwartz, a historian of Chinese thought in Harvard University, published the book “Seeking Prosperity: Yan Fu and the West,” which has long been considered a classic in this field. In 1998, Mr. Huang Kewu questioned the major points contained therein (including those concerning seeking the country’s prosperity and understanding of individual freedom, the encounter between Chinese and Western cultures, and Yan Fu’s position). This article argues that Huang’s question is the tangle of dissent and misreading, and tries to make a more detailed analysis of the misunderstanding in this dissertation. This article aims to show that academic controversy is hard work, misreading is inevitable, especially for the Smiths, I can only be cautious.
