Moment in Peking is a novel written by Lin Yutang in English during the trip to the United States to reflect Chinese culture and local customs and practices. The translation of this special creation phenomenon is different from the characteristics and requirements of Chinese translation of ordinary English works. Traditionally, the study of translation of symmetric predicates usually examines the conversion of appellations between different languages from the perspective of linguistics or interculturalism, focusing on the realization of semantic or pragmatic functions. In this paper, with the aid of general rhetoric theory, this paper explores the reduction of Chinese terms in the novel Moment in Peking. First of all, it analyzes the rhetorical features of the original appellations in the novel, and then analyzes the features, cultural connotations and profound implication of these features in the Chinese translation with the help of three Chinese versions. Finally, it is concluded that the translator should make every effort to restore the Chinese context , And hope that this article can provide some ideas and references for the research on the special translation phenomena that need cultural reduction.
