在直径3~4厘米的无色玻璃瓶中装入1/3瓶的水,再滴2毫升左右的机油(以棕红色的为好,密度约为0.9×10~3千克/米~3),可见机油散布在水面上.然后轻轻地沿瓶的边缘倒入适量的酒精(注意不要把机油冲散成小滴),可以观察到随着酒精的增多,机油逐渐由扁平状变为椭球状,最后将变成球形.此时可观察到一个棕红色的小球悬挂于无色透明的溶液中.如果找不到棕红色的机油,也可用橄榄油代替,但由于它的颜色是浅黄色的,所以演示效果不如用机油.
