佛教产生后,经中亚一带沿丝绸之路传入我国。到了北魏时期,在鲜卑拓跋氏建立的北魏政权的大力倡导下,其统治区域内佛教十分兴盛。由于地理位置特殊,固原在北魏时期是丝绸之路的一个重镇,佛教广为传播。这一时期,固原地区大量雕刻佛造像,开凿石窟寺,形成了区域性的佛教文化。据统计,固原境内现存的北魏石佛造像遗址有十多处,其中以彭阳新集石佛造像窖藏和红河的石佛
