Australia is a country characterized by huge inflows of migrants. In response to the demographic change and its impact on the social, cultural and economic scenes, the Australian government has adopted the policies of Assimilation, Integration, and Multiculturalism to tackle with the relationship between the ethnic groups and the mainstream society. This essay argues that multiculturalism, the principle on which the authorities base their policies in regard to migrant issues, is shifting its focus and trying to locate a sound combination between diversity and unity.
