Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) is currently recognized as a periodontal pathogen and direct inoculation of rodents induces animal infections. Application of different rodent models can simulate the Pg-induced periodontitis stages, such as bacterial colonization and proliferation; bacterial invasion; host immune and inflammatory response; and periodontal support tissue destruction and repair processes, and thus rodents Animal models are widely used to validate the etiology hypothesis and identify the virulence of Pg and host response studies. Research in this area began in the 1960s. After half a century of development, the application of rodent models to the study of pathogenicity of Pg has become increasingly diverse. This article reviews the current status of rodent models in Pg research.
