对新文化运动之历史意义的认识,关乎新世纪中国文化建设的走向。抗战时期新儒家贺麟的新文化运动论,迄今仍为百年来不可多得的精到之论。他认为,新文化运动是促进儒家思想新开展的一大转机,其最大贡献是清除儒家僵化和腐化的成分。西学的大规模输入,则给了儒家思想一个吸收、融会、转化西洋文化而得以复兴的契机。儒学的新开展,是一个“吸收西洋文化,儒化西洋文化”的过程。中国的民主化,应超越18世纪西方的消极民主,而采行中国化的“儒家的民主”。贺麟最深刻而富有创意的观点,是其以柏拉图的理念、基督教的上帝、康德的道德律令比拟五伦观念,从而阐发了三纲的片面之爱、片面之义务的绝对道德价值,以及它对于中华帝国独特的社会整合功能。贺麟的五伦新诠,可谓“传统之创造性转化”的范例。
The understanding of the historic significance of the New Culture Movement is related to the trend of Chinese cultural construction in the new century. The New Culture Movement Theory by Neo-Confucian He Lin during the War of Resistance Against Japan is by now still a rare and exquisite treatise. In his opinion, the New Culture Movement is a great turning point in promoting the new development of Confucianism. Its greatest contribution is to clear the rigidified and corrupt elements of Confucianism. The large-scale input of Western learning gave an opportunity for Confucianism to rejuvenate by absorbing, integrating and transforming Western culture. The new development of Confucianism is a process of “absorbing Western culture, Confucianism and Western culture.” China’s democratization should go beyond the passive democracy in the west in the 18th century and adopt the “Confucian democracy” with Chinese characteristics. He Lin’s most profound and creative point of view is that he expounds the absolute ethical value of the three-sided one-sided love and one-sided obligation by comparing it with the concept of Platonism and the moral laws of Christian God and Kant, For the Chinese Empire unique social integration function. He Lin’s new interpretation of the Five Keys is indeed an example of “the traditional creative transformation.”
