莆田,宋代称为兴化军,领莆田、仙游、兴化三县。军治所原设在兴化,寻移莆田。兴化军是蔡襄、郑樵、刘克庄等著名历史文化名人的故乡,文化底蕴深厚,藏书名家甲于全闽,闻名于世,素有“文献名邦”的美誉。由于此前对兴化莆田刻书的研究成果不多,所见者大多只是停留在对莆田古代一部分刻书目录的初步整理上,且存在较多错误,从中反映出来的问题,已经影响到今人对 Putian, Song called Xinghua Army, led Putian, Xianyou, Xinghua three counties.
