北宋《本草图经》与现代中药鉴定学有一定的渊源关系，苏颂编辑《本草图经》的目的与现代中药鉴定学的任务即鉴定中药的真伪、优劣、确保中医药质量是完全一致的，并且二者记载内容也十分相近。可以说《本草图经》对现代中药鉴定学贡献很大，在中药鉴定学发展史上起着承前启后的作用。
