由于火在原始社会中的重要作用 ,在古罗马出现了对灶神维斯塔的膜拜 ,维斯塔贞女随之登上历史舞台。她们照看圣火 ,主持一些宗教仪式 ,享有无可辩驳的特权 ,被称为“古罗马最解放的妇女”。但这种极高的社会地位 ,是以丧失其终身自由和幸福为代价的 ,她们受严格的道德规范的束缚 ,与其他罗马妇女一样 ,同为男权之下被统治、被蹂躏的对象。所以 ,对其社会地位不宜高估
