2015年5月底在武汉召开的青山长江大桥初步设计审查会确定,该大桥将采用主跨为938m的斜拉桥方案。青山长江大桥两岸港区和码头众多,要满足码头的使用需求和通航条件,可选择的桥型只有跨越能力较大的斜拉桥和悬索桥。因天兴洲的地质特征不适宜放置锚碇,大桥最终选用斜拉桥桥型。
