In existing monographs on cultural criticism, Kingsley is rarely placed in an important position to study. What is even more regrettable is that he has also repeatedly been classified as a “Philistine” - the category Arnold once called the “enemy of culture”. In fact, what the “Philistines” advocates is exactly what Kingsley objected to. The fundamental reason for this opposition can be found in Kingsley’s cultural thought. Kingsley was a prominent social reformer, but at the beginning of the reform he held a different view than most of the reformers at the time. He always holds the belief that reform begins in the heart. This belief constitutes the soul of his overall cultural outlook.
