To investigate the effect of estradiol on intimal hyperplasia after carotid artery balloon injury in ovariectomized rats, twenty-one S-D rats, 8- and 10-week-old were selected and divided into three groups: non-castrated Control group (n = 7), castration control group (n = 7) and experimental group (n = 7, castration + estradiol). After three days of intraperitoneal injection of estradiol, the left common carotid artery was injured by 2 .0F percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty balloon. Rats were sacrificed two weeks after arterial injury, and the ratio of intima area to intima area to medial area was measured. The results showed that the ratio of intima area (0.72 ± 0.220mm2) and intima-media area (0.0533 ± 0.037) in male experimental group was significantly lower than that in non-castration control group (0 .110 ± 0. 0 18mm2 and 0 .740 ± 0. 0 5 1, P all <0.01) and the castration control group (0.098 ± 0. 0 14mm2 and 0.70 1 ± 0 .0 40, P <0.05). The ratio of intimal area to intima area (0. 52 ± 0. 0 30) in the female experimental group was significantly lower than that in the castrate control group (0.010 ± 0.015 mm 2) 1 ± 0. 0 18mm2 and 0. 710 ± 0. 0 31, P all <0.01), but with the non-castration control group (0. 0 78 ± 0. 0 12mm2 and 0 6 19 ± 0. 0 41) was not significantly different (P> 0.05). These results suggest that estradiol can inhibit intimal hyperplasia after arterial injury in ovariectomized rats
