望月怀远是中国古典诗歌中最富生命力的传统主题之一。在汉末建安时期就产生了相当数量的月下怀远名篇,随着诗人们的不断创新,明月意象的内涵也渐趋丰富,并沾溉着后世的诗作。谢庄以前的诗人们不懈地探索托物寄情的表现方法,至谢庄《月赋》“隔千里兮共明月”之句一出,终为托月寄情的思维定势和表现方法做出突破性的贡献。尽管此句在当时受到嘲讽,但它对后世的望月怀远诗的创作产生了极为深远的影响。
