MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a newly discovered class of endogenous, non-coding small RNA molecules that completely or incompletely pair with a target mRNA at the post-transcriptional level to inhibit the translation or degradation of mRNA by a target mRNA. The current study suggests that miRNA plays an important regulatory role in cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, cell adhesion, cell metabolism, cell migration and angiogenesis. Recent studies have shown that some miRNAs are differentially expressed in pituitary adenomas, and these abnormally expressed miRNAs are closely related to the diagnosis, classification, size, invasion and clinical efficacy of pituitary adenomas. This article will give a detailed review on the role of miR-NAs in pituitary tumors.
