In the summer of 1937, the second Sino-Japanese war broke out and the Japanese army committed a series of atrocities during its march to Nanjing along the lower Yangtze River. These indiscriminate massacres, rape, robbery and arson reached a peak after the fall of Nanjing. The United States missionary and educator Minnie Weitling stayed in the capital of Nanking, bravely facing the massacre with great courage. She converted the campuses of Jinling Women’s Polytechnic into refugee camps to provide shelter and food to more than 10,000 frightened women and children and provide them with security. She worked hard, perseverance, often set their own safety in disregard. Her extraordinary courage, revealed in the bloody terror, led people to always remember the Guanyin Bodhisattva during the Nanjing Massacre after her sad death.
