在现代汉语词汇中,“肥”和“胖”为近义词,都可用来形容体内脂肪多。而在古代,“肥”字最初就拥有表示肉多的含义,但“胖”字原初的意义却与此并无联系,直到唐宋之际,才开始拥有形容物体或者尸体肿胀的含义,并且一直延用,到金代开始正式用来指称人类脂肪多,与现代汉语用法基本类似。本文将对“胖”字的语义演变过程,及“胖”与“肥”字在不同领域的使用情况进行探析。据《说文解字·肉部》:“胖,半体肉也。一曰广肉。
