Using the 2000-2006 customs trade data, China’s exports and imports are broken down into deep marginal and breadth margins. The study found that, in the short term, the depth margin contribution is even greater, but in the long term, the breadth margin contribution is even greater. This conclusion is different from previous studies mainly because the paper defines the binary margins in the enterprise-product-country dimensions. However, previous studies only considered one or two dimensions. In addition, by decomposing the cross-sectional exports into binary marginalies, it is found that the discrepancies in import and export between product and country dimensions are mostly explained by the margin of breadth, but the differences in import and export of enterprise dimensions are more explained by depth margins.
