Intellectual property (IP) is the hottest and embarrassing commodity in the new economy. This is particularly prominent in the semiconductor industry. Intellectual property rights are at the heart of the ever-evolving microprocessor technology and are shaping a new generation of digital electronic products that will drive communications and wireless connectivity to higher speeds and greater bandwidth. Dataquest pointed out that from 1998 to 1999, the global intellectual property market increased by 36% to 417 million U.S. dollars.
