Ⅰ.Personalities Analysis
Mrs.Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters.“Why,my dear, you must know,Mrs.Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England”“You have no compassion for my poor nerves.”“You mistake me … I have heard you mention them …at least twenty years.”This is a typical conversation between Mrs.Bennet and Mr.Bennet,we can see that the business of Mrs.Bennet was to get her daughters married men with big fortune.
Elizabeth is clever and sensitive at observing surroundings. For example, when there is a dancing party in the Netherfield Park, some inappropriate words and deeds of Mrs.Bennet’s and her little daughters’ are seen through Elizabeth’s eyes.At the same time,Elizabeth also finds Mr.Darcy’s arrogance and impatience while Mr.Bingley is so enthusiastic to her sister Jane.Just from a small party, she can grasp so much information and give proper understanding about others’ personalities.Certainly, she can’t make every correct judgment, but she is at least different from other common people.
Ⅱ.General Impression
(1) The most impressive aspect of the book for me is the discrepancy between Elizabeth and her mother.Mrs.Bennet is a woman who wants her daughters to marry wealthy men.We can even say that this is the ultimate dream of her in her lifetime. So when she hears that a wealthy man,Mr.Bingley comes to their country, she wracks her brain in order to bring her daughters to visit Bingley.Elizabeth is just different from her mother. She is more like her father who is a ordinary country gentleman and content with their quiet life.So when Elizabeth is first proposed by Mr.Darcy who is in more possession of fortune than Mr.Bingley but is prejudiced against by her,she firmly refuses him just for a simple but basic reason, that is she doesn’t love him at that time.Maybe Mrs.Bennet would fly into a rage if she knew what her daughter Elizabeth does to Mr.Darcy.
(2) When we read the book,we can always find the same personalities in the society now.The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads:“It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”.The undertone is very clear:the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession. I couldn’t forget how eagerly Mrs.Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. Why is she so crazy about these things? We must mention the situation in Britain at that time.Only the eldest son has the right of inheriting his father’s possessions.Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus,we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions.
In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of“money determines everything”is still rooted in some people’s mind.A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages.Education background, possessions, and good jobs remain the main reason that may influence one’s marriage.Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking:Can money determine everything?
Austen left this problem for us to think.I think the depth of this novel is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic.Today, her book can still be the guidance revealing to us the economic relationships both at her times and in our modern times.
