上世纪50年代初,作为新中国第一个“五年计划”期间重点工程之一的718厂,在北京大山子建立。及至2000年底,前身为718厂的北京七星华电科技集团,为配合当时的大山子地区规划改造,迁出了部分产业,并将闲置下来的厂房出租。于是,798厂艺术区诞生了。被闲置的798厂院规划有序,颇具“包豪斯(现代主义)”建筑风格,很快吸引了艺术家们的注意。“这个早年由德国人设计的工厂漂亮大方,而且租金便宜,每平米六毛钱,周边生活成本也很低。”大批艺术机构、艺术家们开始来798租用厂房,渐而汇集了画廓、设计室、艺术展示空间、艺术家工作室 In the early 1950s, the 718 plant, one of the key projects during the “Five-Year Plan” of New China, was established in Dashanzi, Beijing.
