【Abstract】William Faulkner is a famous American novelist of the 20th century,is also the representative of the southern writers.In this paper,we can know Faulkner’s views on racial discrimination through analyzing the characters and environment description in this work.Race issue was the main content of William Faulkner creation.In this work it is very clear that he was not in favor of racial discrimination and the condemned it.

Chapter One Introduction
William Cuthbert Faulkner (born on September 25,1897 – July 6,1962),also known as Will Faulkner,was an American writer and Nobel Prize laureate from Oxford,Mississippi.Dry September is one of the most excellent short stories which reflected the real situation and problem in southern United States.Many critics’ analysis was from multi-subject perspectives,but in this thesis I will analysis this single theme—racial discrimination.
Through analysis,we can know that the racism in American at that times and Faulkner’s attitude toward this problem.
Chapter Two Racial discrimination reflected by the figure description
In this novel Faulkner described three major characters,which are different typical people in the southern United States.And he also expressed his own viewpoints through the depict of the four characters.
Minne was a hateful and tragic figure.Social prejudice and her own sexual starvation made her almost crazy.Her gossip killed Will.She never considered the consequences and she needn’t to do that.The author gave her a crazy ending in order to mock the crazy society at that time.
McLendon was a typical white man in southern United States who had swallowed up by the loss of aspiration and pain.He was the head of the killing activity.The man didn’t care about the truth but wanted to get revenge on African Americans.Therefore,the murder can only take place in a society that has a strong sense of prejudice against black Americans.The social background allowed all these things to take place.
Will Mayes,a black night watchman in the ice plant,was a good "nigger".He was a tragedy figure in this novel.The innocent black American,Will Mayes,was a sacrificial victim of the specific historical time.
Chapter Three Analysis of the racial discrimination in the environment description
Environmental description is one of the important art means in strengthening the literary work’s theme.The title of the novel Dry September from the beginning to make readers feel depressive and unusual.When summer turns into autumn everyone knows that changes will occur.“Dry September” is a fitting title to this short story because numerous changes happen throughout the story as well as during the season.He depicted a series of natural images like,climate,moon,stars,air and dust.These images were unique and contained implied meaning.The imagery creation provides a solid background for readers to understand exactly what is going on during this time.We can feel the tragic factors through the modifiers which aroused the reader’s hatred to the racist mobs and compassion to the black.The most important is that the environment depict was close to the racist crimes.The writer used them to blame the racial discrimination.
Chapter Five Conclusion
William Faulkner is one of the most important writers in the United States,was also thought as the most important writer of the southern.Dry September is one of the masterpiece of his short stories.This story involved racial issues that he had always been focus on.Faulkner exposed the white racist crime that they lynched a poor black guy.In a conclusion,in Faulkner’s works,he criticized racial discrimination and expressed sympathy to the black.Through profound analysis ,we can get a conclusion that Faulkner was disapprove of racial discrimination.
