“Underground people, or contemporary heroes” is one of the masterpieces of Vladimir MacAnin, a famous contemporary Russian writer. In the ambivalent context of intertextuality, the novel deconstructs Dostoyevsky’s significance of “Notes in Basement” and “Crime and Punishment” through the creation of characters and plot settings. In contrast to the motto of “active freedom” shown in Dostoyevsky’s works, “underground people, or contemporary heroes” exhibit a more “negative freedom,” in which the author Expressing Existence Existence through “Negative Freedom”.
