The purpose of this paper is to examine Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory to the rhetorical translation of Chinese poetry since the 1990s. The language of contemporary Chinese poetry, by displaying the omission of symbolic expression, forms a desire of “little other things” that tends to leak out of the symbolic domain, and this desires destined to be obstructed mean the desire to obstruct . Lacan sees desire as a metonymy, which is also a significant rhetorical feature of contemporary Chinese poetry. By analyzing various manifestations of the rhetoric of the metonymy in contemporary Chinese poetry, this article explores how the rhetoric achieves a kind of writing that challenges the grand rhetorical discourse and reveals the intrinsic trauma and absolute goodness of the symbolic order.
