Smuggling recorders, which began to appear in 1978, are the first new type of home electronic media in mainland China that is integrated into the global wave of electronic information. During this period, many mainland people were willing to spend about a year’s salary on the purchase of a smuggling tape recorder, not only because people are increasingly concerned about the daily desire of individual self-consumption but also because they are not satisfied with the traditional propaganda methods of the mainland media . This paper argues that the prevalence of smuggling tape recorders not only means the emergence of truly marketable consumers and audiences of modern media during the Republic, but also shows that the new electronic information technology and electronic culture have given birth to and promoted the social and cultural changes in contemporary China .
